Time And Relative Dimension In Space

We just met, and this is crazy, but I'm the Doctor, join me maybe?

"Sounds Like You Need a Doctor", #1 in my new fan series. 2X2 ft mixed media on wood panel.

Foreground is gouache, background was achieve with salt and alcohol over wet media.

The symbol in the lower left is either Gallifreyan for Time Lord or else the Doctor's name. This is widely debated.

I <3 Gallifreyan writing.

Random other things

Here are 3 more panels belonging to the Electro Scream story:

These are all gouache on watercolor paper.  Note: they aren't in order.

And here's a little doodle I did as a favor to a teacher:

St. Lucy and the Blindness Blooming

Um, so, this is St. Lucy, patron saint of the blind.

She was commissioned by a friend of mine who straight up went blind out of nowhere a couple of years ago.  To my understanding, he woke up fine one day, went to class, and was blind before it was over.  No warning whatsoever.

This is my first paid painting commission, which was definitely a learning process.  It is also the first realistic portrait I've done combining different reference and such, which was a chore.  She is 2 X 2 ft.  St. Lucy herself is gouache and marker while her crown and eyeball platter are acrylic.  The background is an effect made by acrylic and 91% rubbing alcohol.

The story of St. Lucy is that she was an early Christian who was betrothed through arranged marriage to a pagan.  The story goes two different ways.  In one she refuses to marry the guy and his soldiers try torturing her, but can find any way to hurt her but to gouge out her eyes.  In the version I prefer, the man's favorite thing about her is her beautiful eyes, so she pokes them out with a fork (!) and is like "Here you go.  Now leave me alone, I'm married to Jesus."  Or something like that.

She is traditionally pictured carrying her eyes around in her platter, but with eyes also in her head.  I guess they were restored by God after she died.  But I thought it was sort of stupid for her to have them both in a platter and in her head, so I went this route instead.  Now, I can't claim to know what it is like to be blind, but the inspiration for the background was the idea that you might see nebulous shapes and colors in the darkness, sort of like when you rub your eyes really hard.  I wanted the piece to be hopeful, so I put her in a look out pose, like she was still moving forward, trying to find her way.  I hope my friend enjoys it.

Anyhow, I just want to add that I'm not Catholic, so if the story isn't entirely correct, I apologize.

Tattooists I Heart

The unfortunate truth of it is that besides Mr. Jean-Francois Palumbo:

...I do not have any of the other really awesome tattooists that I've taken a liking to over the years featured under the Art I Heart section.  This is mainly because I like to limit that down to art that has had a direct effect on my work, and since I'm no tattooist, well, you know.  But, I do totally keep a creeperly file of my favorites on my computer, so I decided to go ahead and share.  I've found most of these by hiding in the bookshelves at Hastings and poring over a giant stack of tattoo mags, imagining myself tattooing and thinking about how goddamned tragically that would probably end ("You warhammered a tattoo needle THROUGH my arm!!!")  So, for those of us that cannot do, I present to you, awesome tattoos to slobber over:

Lionel Fahy

Amanda Wachob

Cy Wilson

Ian McAllister

Ian McAllister again, because I couldn't decide which was more awesome.

Loic LaVenu

Mark Halbstark

Noon

Ondrash

Ran MacLurkin

Edit:  Just found this awesome artist!

Jukan6, from Deviantart

So, you can probably tell that I lean a bit towards the whimsical, abstract, painting, and graphic inspired.  Basically, something that doesn't look like a tattoo.  I also admire a lot of photo realist tattooing, for the skill and patience it requires, but much photo realism in painting, it just does not quite capture my imagination the ways that these do.

I really encourage you guys to click and take a closer look at the high res versions of these.  The detail!  Win.

Two Insomnias

My first attempt at painting a comic. A short story about my husband and I, and our unwavering morning routine. Done in gouache and sharpie on gessoed wood panel. The quote at the beginning and the title are inspired by the Rumi poem, When I Am With You.
