Spring 2012 Work

Finally got all of my work back from finals.  My favorites from printmaking and figure drawing, as well as a teaser image for my upcoming comic story, Electro Scream.

You Have No Power Over Me

Detail 1

Detail 2

Ok, I'm not much of a printmaker.  All of the different processes are very counter-intuitive to me.  But I love silk screening!  This is my final (all of my work involved pop culture icons accompanied with a related phrase) along with a couple of detail images.  If you don't know (which a couple of people from class didn't) this is baby Toby from Labyrinth, with lyrics from "Dance Magic" and a transfer of a barn owl, which David Bowie's character has the ability to disguise himself as.  LOVE!

Nervous Gnaw

Here's an in class multi-media drawing.  If you make me work with charcoal, expect me to go above and beyond to make it funky.  It's charcoal, acrylic wash, white chalk, and red pastel.

I Am Queen in a Land That Doesn't Forget
The piece for which my profile picture was taken.  Self portrait (obviously), prisma and copic markers on Arches paper.

Haunted Art School

Figure drawing final.  Everything I planned went wrong with this piece, so I decided to say "eff it" and just went crazy with it.  Also, when in doubt, splatter!  Marker, watercolor, pastel, chalk, and silver paint.

13/19

Second piece of the final for figure drawing.  Only stipulations was that the drawing depicted two figures in an interior.  These are my friends, a married couple.  He has MS, which messes with his mental faculties, causing him to have faulty memory among other things.  I made this piece to show the effect of this disease on him and on his marriage.  He and his wife can fight like any couple, but in the end, she takes care of him, and gives him a safe haven.  I inserted my friend Derek in the back as a sort of anthropomorphic representation of the disease, a malevolent lurker in their lives.

Electro Scream

And finally, a teaser image from my upcoming, in progress comic(?) painting story, Electro Scream.  Neat-o, yeah?

Paint Tool SAI

After recently acquiring a new (working!) laptop, I decided to dust off my tablet and take a swing at digital art. I've had the tablet for a couple of years, but I've never had a good enough machine to use it with.  Downloaded  Paint Tool SAI and started doodling.  Here are the results of my first attempt to digitally draw/color.

Not as good of quality as I could do on paper, but fun.

Nouveau Curvy

Portrait of Christina Hendricks I did for a friend during summer 2011.  Metallic paint and watercolor....boobies.

Don't Be Koi

My largest piece to date, 2 ft X 4 ft.  Painted from model.  Probably 10 hours total.  During which time we watched The Help and learned all about the power of shit pies.

New Paintings

More from my "stealing yo shit off facebook series" (idunno).  Anyhow, here are "Arabian Dreams" and "Jekyll and Hide It"

"Arabian Dreams"

Here is my very white friend in her wedding garb. She married into an Indian family. As always, I stalk my fb friends, and choose interesting profile pictures to transform into paintings. In doing so, I am questioning their decision in how they represent themselves digitally. I like this one because it showcases her new blended identity. Like the others, the painting is in gouache and watercolor, but I've also added metallic spray paint and glitter glue to up the sparkle. Thinking I might show these with the original pics for comparison. Thoughts?

  "Jekyll and Hide It"

This photo was highly photoshopped, which is something I hadn't worked with before. Thus the large sections of white. I also find it interesting that he is wearing these huge glasses. Hiding something?

Valentine

My valentine to  my husband, Doug.  Bear is his pet name.  Not quite as pretty as in person (I photoshop not so goodly), but it's the best I can get online right now.  It's watercolor, gouache, and colored pencil on paper.

Update: Spring Semester

Due to some problems that I'm no longer lingering over, I ended up adding a lot of studio classes to this semester in order to be able to graduate by the end of fall.  Unfortunately, that means I probably won't be working on my Self-Adhesive comics very much, nor will I be able to work on the scripting for my collaboration on the Fallen comic with Derek.  BUT, my awesome sauce professor John Harlan Norris, painter and singer for the band Harlan, is allowing me to turn in comics and cartoon images for homework.  Right now I am taking independent painting, printmaking, ceramics, and drawing (again), so you'll probably be seeing a variety of new work, even in areas that I don't specialize in (ceramics/printmaking).  Here, have a lady I drew.

Not FABULOUS, but it was my first try at painting with markers.  I used prismas for this.  Random D&D character I had floating around in my head.  I like her eyes and nose best.
